What inventory management software costs for a small e-commerce brand

Shopify’s native inventory, a lightweight inventory system, or a full warehouse platform: sourced 2026 prices for the tools small Shopify and DTC brands actually shortlist, what the barcode hardware costs, and three worked budgets so you can match the spend to your real order volume.

The short answer

For a Shopify brand with roughly 20–500 SKUs fulfilling in-house, inventory software in 2026 falls into four price bands:

Add roughly $350–$1,400 in one-time barcode hardware for a small room, and a shipping-label tool if your platform doesn’t include one. The expensive mistake is not choosing the wrong band — it’s buying a higher band to fix a problem that was really about locations, labels, and receiving.

Prices checked October 10, 2026. “Official” means read from the vendor’s own pricing page that day; “reported” means a third-party source, named below. None of it is a quote. Vendors change prices and plan limits often; confirm before you buy.

First: Shopify’s Stocky app is gone

Many small brands handled purchase orders and stocktakes in Stocky, Shopify’s inventory app for POS merchants. Shopify’s help center states that “the Stocky app will no longer be available after August 31st, 2026” and directs merchants to Shopify’s built-in inventory management features (official). If your process was built around Stocky, you are already making an inventory-tool decision whether you planned to or not — which makes this a good moment to fix the process underneath it.

For a single-location brand with simple products, native Shopify inventory plus disciplined process — named bin locations, barcodes, receiving against purchase orders, and regular cycle counts — is often enough. The usual reasons to add a system are reorder and purchasing management, multiple sales channels or wholesale, component-level tracking for kits and bundles, and barcode-driven picking and counting.

Shipping labels are a separate line

If your inventory tool doesn’t print labels, most brands add a shipping platform. ShipStation prices by monthly shipments: Starter runs $14.99–$174.99 a month and Standard $29.99–$449.99, with bundles and lot tracking starting at Standard and scan-to-receive and purchase orders at Premium ($349.99+) (official; annual billing saves 20%). Count shipping software in the comparison — an all-in-one tool can be cheaper than a cheaper inventory app plus a mid-tier shipping plan.

What barcode hardware costs

Zebra TC22 handheld~$994–$1,385 by configurationReported reseller pricing

4×6 labels~$36–$38 per 1,000 (Uline); ~$15–$26 per 1,000 elsewhereOfficial (Uline) / reported
Bin-label holders~$38 per 25 (2×3″)Official, Uline

A budget starter kit (two Bluetooth scanners, a USB Rollo, a thousand labels, 25 bin holders) lands around $350. A sturdier setup (two Zebra scanners, a Zebra printer, 4,000 labels, 100 bin holders) lands around $1,200–$1,400. Handheld mobile computers only make sense once the software supports scan-driven picking and counting.

Three worked budgets

Assume a brand with about 150 SKUs, 900 orders a month, four people in receiving and fulfillment, one location, and a few bundles. Year-one cost of the inventory and shipping stack, on top of Shopify:

ApproachStackSoftware, year oneOne-timeYear-one total
A. Shopify nativeShopify inventory + ShipStation Standard (1,000 shipments) for labels and bundles$149.99 × 12 ≈ $1,800Budget hardware ~$350≈ $2,150
B. Lightweight IMSZoho Inventory Premium (bins, barcodes, counts) + ShipStation Standard$79 × 12 + $1,800 ≈ $2,750Hardware ~$350–$1,400≈ $3,100–$4,150
C. Mid-range platformOrdoro inventory Premium (kitting, POs, stocktakes) + Ordoro shipping Advanced($499 + $59) × 12 = $6,696Hardware ~$1,200–$1,400≈ $7,900–$8,100

Arithmetic is ours, applied to the official prices above; excludes Shopify itself, postage, and staff time. Confirm the Shopify integration and order limits on any plan before buying. A full WMS at the reported ShipHero price would be roughly $24,000 a year — a different decision for a different volume.

Notice the spread: the difference between A and C is roughly $6,000 in year one. That’s real money, but it’s small next to the cost of staff time spent searching, recounting, and fixing mis-picks. The right choice depends less on the price list than on which manual work the system would actually remove — and that is a process question.

How to decide which band you’re in

Where an assessment fits

Most of the questions above are answered on the fulfillment floor, not in a demo. A Business Systems Assessment applied to fulfillment maps receiving, storage, picking, counting, and bundles as they actually happen, then recommends keep, add, or replace with costs attached. Our published planning range for businesses under 100 employees is $5,500–$11,500, fixed in writing at scoping (pricing detail). We don’t resell any tool on this page or take referral fees. Questions to ask any inventory software vendor

Frequently asked questions

How much does inventory management software cost for a small Shopify brand?

In 2026, Shopify’s native inventory adds no subscription beyond your Shopify plan. Lightweight systems such as Zoho Inventory run about $29–$249 a month billed annually; mid-range platforms such as inFlow, Ordoro, Cin7 Core, and Finale run about $300–$1,200 a month, often with a setup fee; warehouse management systems for brands start around $2,000 a month. Add roughly $350–$1,400 in one-time barcode hardware.

Is Shopify’s built-in inventory enough?

For a single-location brand with simple products, often yes, if the process underneath is disciplined: named bin locations, barcodes, receiving against purchase orders, and regular cycle counts. Brands usually add a system for reorder and purchasing management, multiple channels or wholesale, component-level tracking of kits and bundles, or barcode-driven picking and counting.

What happened to Shopify Stocky?

Shopify’s help center states that the Stocky app will no longer be available after August 31, 2026, and directs merchants to Shopify’s built-in inventory management features. Brands that relied on Stocky for purchase orders and stocktakes need to move that work to native Shopify features or another inventory tool.

What does barcode equipment cost for a small warehouse?

A budget starter kit of two Bluetooth scanners, a USB label printer, a thousand labels, and bin-label holders costs around $350. A sturdier setup with Zebra scanners and a Zebra thermal printer costs around $1,200–$1,400. Rugged handheld mobile computers run about $1,000–$1,400 each and only make sense once software supports scan-driven picking.

When does a small brand need a WMS instead of an inventory app?

When order volume, staff count, or a second location means process discipline and a lightweight inventory system can no longer keep the numbers accurate. At a reported price around $2,000 a month for a brand-focused WMS, it is a different decision from a $79-a-month inventory app, and rarely the first step.
